Indeed. I looked up Alsted et al in Denmark; 12thC Romanesque. What an uncovering! A good place to start. There is some reminder in the St Keyne story of the winged creatures which are the symbols of the Evangelists; man/angel, ox/bull, lion, eagle. A number of Paul's stories of Wild Saints bring more specifically wild creatures close to hand, which is great for the engraver. Smile.

It is quite remarkable isn't it! There are some other wonderful frescoes in Denmark. Elmelunde Church is exquisite, a wonder they still survive! Over here in the UK it is a great sadness that so many of our wall paintings were destroyed during the Reformation. But there are some scant remains. I am a big fan of the tetramorph imagery of the 4 evangelists. I would love to do a carving of these one day.
